C. Arlene Ashlock Smith, formerly of Wickenburg, Arizona, passed away December 4, 2013 in Surprise, Arizona. She was 90. Arlene was born on March 28, 1923 in Center Point, Iowa, to Orval E. Ashlock and Vera Heins Ashlock. Arlene married Charles Kacena of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1943 during WWII. Over the years Chuck and Arlene lived in Keokuk, Iowa, South Amboy, New Jersey, Ft. Madison, Iowa, Wilmington, Delaware, Hendersonville, Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee, and Moberly, Missouri, where they raised their six children: Jack Robert Kacena, now deceased; Jane Ann Kacena, now deceased; James Leo Kacena of White Salmon, Washington; Jay Orval Kacena of Columbia, Missouri; Jon Charles Kacena, now deceased; and Jeffrey Alfred Kacena of Kingwood, Texas. Chuck Kacena passed away in 1977 at age 55. Arlene was also preceded in death by three of her six children, Jack Robert, Jane Ann and Jon Charles. In addition to being survived by three sons, James Leo, Jay Orval and Jeffrey Alfred, Arlene is also survived by four grandchildren: Christopher Kacena of Dunwoody, Georgia; Andrew Kacena of St. Louis, Missouri; and Benjamin Kacena and Katherine Kacena of Kingwood, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Perrian Kacena, Justin Kacena and James Kacena of Dunwoody, Georgia. In 1985 Arlene married George R. (Dick') Smith, a friend since childhood from Center Point, Iowa. Dick and Arlene lived over 20 years in Wickenburg, Arizona, were members of Wickenburg First Presbyterian Church and were married 26 years until Dick passed away in 2011. The family requests that any memorials be made to the ALS Association or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
