J. Simpson

March 27, 1933 — February 29, 2012

James Scott Simpson was born March 27, 1933 in Prescott, Arizona to Kenneth Edward Simpson and Helen Scott Simpson. He left this world February 29, 2012 doing one of the things he enjoyed most, golfing. Scott was a Farrier educator, horseman, author, entertainer, and was well known throughout the western United States living in both Arizona and Montana. He established farrier courses at Montana State University, Walla Walla State University and his own Northwest Horseshoeing School. He had also authored several farrier books and articles. Scott began his horseshoeing career in the 1950s in California. He attended CalPoly University in San Luis Obispo, California. He began teaching at Montana State University in the early 1970s and left there in 1983, teaching at Walla Walla before establishing his own school. He was vice-president of the American Farrier's Association for several years and was instrumental in organizing the AFA's Certification Program. He was the type of person who was at ease in a crowd singing and playing the guitar or on his own with a horse. After his retirement, Scott lived in Montana in the summers and wintered in Wickenburg, Arizona where he felt quite at home with team roping, tennis, and golfing. Scott is survived by his five children: Daughter Mary Smith of Ritzville, Washington, sons Blake Simpson of Bozeman, Montana, Benjamin Simpson of Belgrade, Montana, Frank Simpson of Belgrade, Montana and daughter Howie Simpson of Redding, California; his two sisters, Sheila Dibos and Peggy Lyman; Grandchildren Megan Jones, Chrissie Smith, Jeffrey Simpson, Michelle Simpson, Rachel Simpson, Mercy Anna Simpson, John Scott Simpson, and great-grandchildren, Brendan and Joseph Jones. Above all else, Scott held his relationship with the Lord to be of utmost importance. He attended Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg, AZ, and Valley of Flowers Mission in Belgrade, MT. A wonderful memorial has been written in honor of Scott on "The Hoof blog", you may view it here: http://hoofcare.blogspot.com/2012/03/silent-anvil-j-scott-simpson.html
