William "Bill" Steckman, age 85, passed away on March 17, 2021. Bill was born in Arkansas City, Kansas on September 26, 1935 to Robert and Opal Steckman. While growing up Bill's father was serving in the military and following the military his father worked in construction and traveled all over the Country. Bill said of his early life, "I loved my father but never had a chance to get to know him" with his working and traveling. Bill's mother worked as a waitress for years and kept the family together, He said, "she was very, very strict but not mean" and considered her his "Guardian Angel".
Bill joined the U.S. Army on his 17th birthday in 1952. He served in Korea and attained the rank of Corporal. He was injured severely when his jeep ran over a land mine. He would have liked to continue a career in the Army but his injuries inhibited his ability to serve. Following his military service he returned and began working in Construction which he did for some 10 years, later went to work in building maintenance at Honeywell and General Electric. Bill married Sharon Dusenbery when his was 23 years old. They had a son Tommy Lee Steckman born in 1959. After Bill & Sharon divorced he later married the love of his life, Charlene Haggard in 1995. They moved to Arizona and eventually settled in Wickenburg.
Bill was very active in the American Legion for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Charlene in 2002 and his son Tommy in 2006.
Bill is survived by many friends and his family at the American Legion.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Wickenburg Funeral Home with Graveside services with military honors to be held on Wednesday, March 24th at 1:00 PM at the Wickenburg Cemetery.
